How FemSMS Started

Launched by Footage and partners in Ukraine in April 2022, FemSMS responds to information poverty by testing and providing compassionate text-based information for women across Ukraine and the region. Texts in Ukraine focus on mental health, gender-based violence (GBV), trafficking prevention, women’s health, hotlines and emergency contacts. Announcing the launch of the new project earlier this year, Project Director and co-founder and Executive Director of Footage, Dr. Kristen Eglinton, said:

“FemSMS is set to be a tremendous gender-responsive asset to all strategic communications initiatives in Ukraine and border regions where trauma-informed conversations around gender, violence, and war are urgent.”

Footage collaborators in Ukraine include Project Kesher (our very generous seed funder in Ukraine), Project Kesher Ukraine, UkraineNow, and TheMaraPartners.

This is the first time a human-centered design process has been used to build a gender-sensitive SMS platform in a war zone. Our learnings are now being used to implement in the USA, and, by 2023 in Afghanistan and other human rights contexts. Please read our press release and/or be in touch to learn more about the research process, the results, and to support this important work.

About Footage Foundation

Footage is a U.S. based feminist organization raising voices to elevate lives through creative research, wellbeing interventions, and advocacy—all advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Footage has received nine Public Diplomacy awards from the U.S. Department of State to design and implement programs focusing on gender, violence, displacement. A nonprofit organization founded by 5 women PhD colleagues at Cambridge University, Footage uses narrative and expressive approaches empowering young women around the world to connect as agents of social change. Our programs provide connection — a community for women on the frontlines of gender inequality where their ideas matter and their voices count. We have a particular focus on forced displacement and gender-based violence and believe compassion and connection are as important to sustainable development as food and water.
